Registering Tertiary Level
Institutions

The Jamaica Tertiary Education Commission (JTEC) serves as the regulatory and supervisory authority for Jamaica’s tertiary education sector, operating under the Ministry of Education. Its primary mandate includes the registration of all tertiary institutions within the country, ensuring they adhere to established standards and contribute effectively to national development goals.

Our Core Duties

Role and Responsibilities

Regulation and Oversight

Maintaining an up-to-date register of local and international institutions. Ensuring minimum standards in governance, financial viability, academic staffing, infrastructure, and student support.

Quality Assurance

Prescribing and monitoring minimum standards for programme delivery. Supporting internal quality assurance mechanisms to align with global best practices and workforce needs.

Student Protection

Safeguarding student interests by enforcing service requirements. Ensuring clear information, transparent records, and adequate academic counselling are provided to all students.

Advisory Function

Advising the Minister of Education on tertiary education matters. Serving as both a regulatory and developmental entity to guide the sector's strategic direction.

Mandate on Registering Tertiary-Level Institutions

JTEC’s mandate requires all institutions proposing to offer tertiary-level education in Jamaica to undergo a comprehensive registration process.

Through these functions, JTEC aims to support the transformation and standardisation of Jamaica’s tertiary education system, ensuring it meets international standards and effectively contributes to the nation’s socio-economic development.
